A prolific, large and very hot bright red chilli. It produces a large plant with impressive numbers of 4cm box shaped fruits with its distinctive black seeds.
A Capsicum pubescens variety from South America, it is a different species to most other chillies grown in the UK with its hairy stems and leaves and attractive blue violet flowers. Originally from the Andes, it thrives at higher altitudes and therefore is much more cold tolerant. In 2024 I harvested my final crop in November and the plants still looked great. It can also be overwintered by pruning right back, potting up and bringing indoors until the following spring.
These Capsicum pubescens have a lower germination rate of 80% so the seed packet size makes up for this.
Approx. 15 seeds
Botanical name: Capsicum pubescens
Chillies love the warmth and need a long growing season, so best to start them off early in a heated propagator at about 23°C. Give them lots of light once germinated, then plant out under cover once the weather’s warmed up in late spring. Space them 50 cm apart, adding lots of organic material.
