Not a sea sponge in sight – meet the homegrown scrubber!
I’ll admit it, it was not long ago I learned luffas don’t come from the sea. Turns out they’re the fruit of a vigorous climbing gourd that gives you both beauty and utility. Let the fruits mature, dry them out, and inside is a natural sponge with just the right scrub – gentle enough for your skin, tough enough for a muddy gardener’s hands.
You could use it for washing up, but honestly, it feels too luxurious for dishes.
Approx. 15 seeds.
Botanical name: Luffa aegyptiaca
Seed Story: Grown for centuries across Asia and Africa, luffas are now a sustainability star – fully compostable and endlessly fascinating to grow. These vigorous vines love warmth, sunshine, and something to climb.
Start indoors early, as they love heat (around 20–25°C to germinate). Transplant to a greenhouse, tunnel or warm, sheltered spot once frost has passed. Give them space and sturdy support, these climbers are ambitious! Harvest the fruits young & green for eating like courgettes – although I don’t recommend it as oddly tasting and fibrous, or leave to mature into your own spa-grade sponges.
