A Welsh heirloom variety with red flowers, beautiful long slender pods, and seeds that are pink and black when mature. It is a vigorous grower and in the past has survived many a bad summer in west Wales.
The seed of this variety was given to Pam Savidge in Wales in 1961. It came from a neighbour – then already in his 80s – who in turn had been given seed by his grandfather, a stonemason who repaired church spires. Pam saved the variety for seed for many years in Wales and then in Ireland, and donated seed to the Irish Seed Savers Association. Thanks to their stewardship it was returned to Wales and to the Wales Seed Hub.

Start beans in April to early May, three weeks before your last frost.
Beans grow quickly and like warm bright conditions so don’t be too hasty.
Start beans in small pots or modules, plant each bean 2 inches deep.
Keep them warm, until frost have passed.
Harden them off outside before planting outside, gradually over a week to ten days.
Bringing them back in over night.
Water them in well, continue to water each day if dry conditions till roots start to form.
Runner beans need good strong supports.
