Sorry, now out of stock for this year!  More coming December 2026.

The ‘Yardstick’ runner bean originated in south Wales. They gradually turn purple as they mature. They can toughen a little towards the end of the season, so best eaten young when they’re tender and juicy.

We were lucky to be given a small handful of these beans from Adam Alexander, ‘The Seed Detective’, who received them from Liam Gaffney via the Irish Seed Savers network. Prior to this, its original provenance is unknown, but is likely to be the result of a competition grower selecting for length from an old, commercially available version of the variety.

Approx. 40 seeds.

Botanical name: Phaseolus coccineus

Original seed kindly provided by Adam Alexander, “The Seed Detective”.

Like all runner beans, they’ll need support such as a frame with canes or string to wind themselves up. Sow indoors in modules in mid spring. Transplant once all risk of frost has passed and soil is warming up, giving 9-12” spacings and adding lots of organic material. Can also be sown outdoors in situ, in rodent free areas!
