A winter leek with blue green leaves, long white shanks and good flavour. It is reputed to be very hardy and stand well into spring.  A heritage variety from Canada under trial by Wales Seed Hub growers. We would love you to try it too!

This variety was apparently once on the National List of varieties that can legally be sold in the UK and seed is the UK Vegetable Gene Bank at Warwick University. The variety was on sale in Canada in the early 1990s from a commercial company called Stokes Seeds and when they dropped it from their list, it was kept in cultivation by a professional gardener and author Linda Gilkeson and subsequently by the small Canadian seed company Full Circle Seeds. Wales Seed Hub growers were interested in this variety because, as well as producing a good crop, Linda reports that is remarkably hardy.

Approx. 200 seeds

Botanical name: Allium porrum

Sow undercover in early spring – either in individual modules or in pots large and deep enough to grow a number of seedlings. Alternatively sow in a well-prepared seed bed undercover or – once temperatures are above 10C – outdoors.   Transplant them after around 10 weeks, once the seedlings have reached about 20cm high and up to pencil thickness.   Make holes made with a dibber, spaced about 20cm each way in well composted soil, and put one plant in each.  If necessary you can trim the roots and leaves slightly to stop them trailing.  Keep well watered.
