A hardy and reliable perennial cottage garden flower – quick to establish and adds striking spikes of height and structure to a garden border. Works well as a cut flower too. Lupins thrive in most garden soils & attract pollinating insects.
I love this flower for its regal upright stems that command attention. This variety originated from a local seed swap in West Wales and comes in lovely shades of purple and will continue to produce flowers throughout spring and summer if you cut the stems back after flowering. As a perennial it will come back the following year too as an even stronger and bigger plant. Reaches to approx. 1 metre tall and wide in time.
The seeds are also really easy to save – simply leave the flowers to go to seed and harvest the whole stem when the pods have changed to a light grey colour and feel dry – leave to dry further as the seed pods open and nice big seeds pop out.

Sow from March to May in modules or small pots and pot on as needed. Plant out at 30cm spacings once soil has warmed up in late spring/early summer. Once established will flower from early May.
The large seeds have a tough coating, so it is best to nick them with a knife, then soak them in water for 24 hours before sowing. They should germinate in 10–14 days at 10–15°C.
