A bean with attitude and spots to prove it.
Meet the Dragon’s Tongue, a compact plant that doesn’t know the meaning of “modest.” Its pods are green splashed with purple, so striking you’ll want to photograph them before dinner. Eat them young for a buttery, tender bite or let them mature to reveal beautifully speckled beans inside, perfect for drying for soups or adding colour to a bean salad.
These beans dry even in soggy Welsh weather (believe me, they’ve tried), forming firm, mould-free pods that keep brilliantly. Heritage, hardy, and handsome – what’s not to love?
Approx. 50 seeds.
Botanical name: Phaseolus vulgaris
Seed Story: Originally from the Heritage Seed Library, this charismatic bean has a long lineage of flavour and resilience. A true survivor, it’s bulked up beautifully under Welsh skies and rewards with a generous harvest for every plant.
Sow after the last frost, direct in the soil or in pots to transplant. Being a dwarf type, it doesn’t need staking, just a sunny spot and well-drained soil. Pick pods young for tender eating, or leave them to dry for a pantry full of colourful beans that’ll brighten winter meals.
