The French Bean that is like a pea!
This is a stunning heritage variety that is as beautiful as it is delicious. Despite its confusing name, it’s actually a vigorous climbing French bean, known for its striking bi-coloured seeds that resemble a ‘Yin Yang’ symbol.
While the young pods can be eaten fresh, this variety truly shines as a shelling or drying bean. When cooked, the seeds hold their shape perfectly but develop a wonderfully soft, creamy texture akin to a floury potato or sweet chestnut. A great choice for winter stews, cassoulets, and soups.

Botanical name: Phaseolus vulgaris
Sow April to June for harvesting July – September depending on conditions. Can be sown direct in warmer soil in late spring – 2 seeds per cane, 30 cm apart. For best results start in modules to be planted out at the same spacing when about 10 cm tall.
