A most attractive cos lettuce, with savoyed purple-brown and green leaves. Larger growing than its name suggests, it stands well in warm conditions outdoors and is slow to bolt. Harvest whole or use as cut-and-come-again.
Information about the origin of this variety is scant, though it appears to be a synonym of Red Leprechaun and Red Cimarron. Perhaps this indicates that this variety has been in cultivation for a long time, with one source suggesting since the 18th century. What is known though are its many appealing characteristics, including flavour, texture, reliability and striking visual appearance, which make Little Leprechaun a great addition to the veg patch.
Approx. 200 seeds.
Botanical name: Lactuca sativa
Sow Feb-July in modules, or can be direct sown. Early sowings can be planted out in a greenhouse or tunnel but this variety does best outdoors throughout the growing season. For full-sized lettuces plant 30cm (12”) apart each way. Water regularly especially during dry spells.
