An exceptionally good Welsh heritage variety. The vigorous plants produce plentiful plump pods of unusually large peas, which are sweet and delicious. The plants grow to around 1.5m tall and so need strong supports.
Approx. 50 seeds per pack.
Botanical name: Pisum sativum
Seed Story: The variety has a romantic story behind it. A German soldier who was a prisoner working on the Llanover estate near Abergavenny during the First World War fell in love with a Welsh girl. After the war was over he returned from Germany to marry her – bringing the pea seeds with him. The peas were grown on the estate for many years and – not surprisingly for such a wonderful pea – gardeners have kept them in cultivation ever since.
Stewarded by Garden Organic’s Heritage Seed Library, and grown by Wales Seed Hub member Sue Stickland in Mid Wales.
Sow in early spring (March-April), in 5 cm modules (or direct in the ground if soil conditions and mice allow!). Transplant 7 cm apart. when roots have filled the modules. Support with wire mesh or tall pea sticks. Harvest over several weeks, as soon as pods are plump with no ‘give’ when you press them.
