This lovely soft yellow perennial flower opens at dusk and emits a delicate evening fragrance, staying open all night to attract nocturnal pollinators. It closes around midday the following day, but the mass of buds on the plant means there will be a constant supply of flowers for around two months. The plants will gently self seed around your garden, finding the places they are happiest growing, but not becoming an invasive pest.
This is one of the best night-flowering plants for your moonlit garden as the delicate colour becomes luminous in the light of the moon.
These edible flowers have a similar taste to lettuce, so will make a fine addition to any green salad whilst also adding some colour.

Botanical names: Oenothera biennis
Direct sow the seeds on the surface of well-draining soil in full sun during spring or autumn.
Press the tiny seeds down lightly because they need light to germinate, keeping the soil damp (not too wet) until sprouts appear in 10 to 30 days.
These seeds can also be planted in a seed tray – again on the surface, in early spring. However most perennial plants give the best germination from an autumn sowing. If sown in a seed tray in the autumn, placing the seed tray in a sealed plastic bag will ensure that the surface sown seeds do not dry out.
