Orange Burning Embers Tagetes (French Marigold)

These lovely single dark orange flowers slowly fade through mid-orange and then a beautiful golden shade. Grow as a companion plant to deter aphids in your greenhouse and garden. This tall tagetes (50-65cm) likes a sunny spot and if you deadhead them, they will keep flowering continuously from June into the autumn. The flowers are adored by pollinators and are particularly attractive to bees and hoverflies.
They are easy to grow and flower early in the season making them an ideal plant for children to grow.
These vibrant stems make a fabulous cut flower which lasts well in the vase (mine even rooted in the water, so I potted them up to make even more flowers). The petals are edible and make a striking addition to salads.

Sow tagetes indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost in a light, well-draining seed compost. Press seeds lightly into the soil but don’t cover them too deeply, as they need light to germinate. Keep the compost moist and warm around 18-20°C
Alternatively, sow directly outdoors in a weed-free, warm soil in May.
